To my family and friends, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful support and peace of mind that both the MND Association and the Flinders Medical Centre Motor Neuron Disease professional team have provided to me when managing my diagnosis of MND. The education and support they have given since my diagnosis has offered me the opportunity to have the best understanding of my health and mind. Their commitment to MND patients and their families is beyond belief and to connect with our future is settling. My own experience and what I have learnt since has highlighted the difficulty people face in getting a diagnosis. I hope to further spread awareness and educate those in the community about the disease and support other people that are also suffering with MND. I decided to start walking the Heysen Trail as a way of moving forward while relishing my past wonderful experiences. It has created an opportunity to reconnect with my old police colleagues that have tracked me down and enjoy long walks in our superb Bush, enjoying all that nature has to offer. It has also provided the extra incentive of fundraising. Having completed the first section of the Heysen Trail from Cape Jervis to The Bluff (near Victor Harbour – 81kms in five days) I am motivated to continue, aiming to walk from Burra to the Barossa Valley, and walk a total of three hundred kilometers. I hope that you can support me in reaching my fundraising goal to acknowledge the support and kindness that the MND foundation has showed me, so they can continue to provide this invaluable service to people diagnosed with MND and support their families into the future. I believe, and my philosophy as a ‘copper’ was.. “You are only as good as the information provided to you”. I later learnt that this is about firstly connecting, having open communication and then operating together for everyone’s benefit.
